When Covid hit, I was ecstatic! I had two weeks off of school, it was like vacation. Fast forward two months and it’s still unsafe to leave the house. That intense and sudden social isolation forced me and millions of people to turn to their devices to find social interaction again. At first, FaceTiming with friends every night was fun, but it started to get a little repetitive after a few weeks: With over the phone communication, it is often difficult to connect on a deeper level due to the physical distance between the correspondents. Some readers may argue that social media helps enhance their communication skills through speaking over the phone, but there are key factors to real life conversations that they are missing. For example, it is hard to read body language and tone of voice, which can lead to completely misunderstanding someone, which could have been easily resolved had they been face to face. These face to face interactions, especially the physical interactions between people, spark receptors in the brain that social media will never be able to replicate (Konnikova 4).
